django-advance-thumbnail
● open source · in productionFixed my own Django pain once — now it installs ~3,300×/month.
Real adoption, not a demo
- Downloaded ~3,300 times a month on PyPI — roughly 100 installs a day, every day.
- In production since July 2023 — nearly 3 years of continuous real-world use.
- Started at three companies I shipped backends for (RBS Tech, Byte Bridge, CosmosID) — plus thousands of third-party installs worldwide. External validation, not a self-claim.
What it does
- Drop in one field — it auto-generates a thumbnail every time an image is saved.
- Regenerates when the source changes, cleans up when it’s deleted. Pillow under the hood, configurable target size.
- Zero boilerplate, zero config to start.
Built once, runs for years
- I kept rewriting the same thumbnail code at every job, so I solved it once and shipped it to PyPI.
- 8 releases, matured through a major version to v2.0.0. Python ≥3.6, current Django.
- Zero open issues, three years in — it just runs.
- This is how I work: ship reusable production systems, then keep them running solo for years.
